The Shag Hair Style

A shag haircut (or long layered haircut) is one of the longest mens hairstyles that is still considered “short.” The shag can be straight or curly, clean or rugged.

HOW TO GIVE A SHAG HAIRCUT

Most use a straight razor rather than scissors to give layers to hair for a shag haircut. Cutting with a razor is a less precise method of cutting hair, and, in this way, the hair is prevented from being all one length at the ends. Shag haircuts are a bit longer than most, and since the idea is for the hair to look somewhat sloppy and unkempt, a shag haircut does not have to be re-cut for months at a time.

When styling a shag, use gel in your hair while its damp. Then, blow it dry. This allows the layered ends of your hair to stick out, and gives the cut a lot of body, shape and texture. For a polished, professional-looking shag, smooth your hair with mousse. A straightening iron will give an even more straight, refined look.

WHO HAS A SHAG HAIRCUT?

The shag haircut is always a popular hairstyle with young men, especially high school and college aged guys. Justin Bieber sports an extremely popular teenage version of the shag. The hair is smoothed around the side of his head yet is still unpolished to achieve a relaxed look. Zac Efron has worn a shag haircut ever since he burst onto the Hollywood scene with his role as Troy Bolton in the High School Musical movie.

Ashton Kutcher wore a shag for his part as Michael in That 70’s Show and liked the look so much, that he has managed to keep a slightly more modern version throughout his career. For a few years, Joe Jonas wore a shag while playing in his band, The Jonas Brothers, using a straigtening iron to polish his look.

Afro Hair Style

An afro (also known as a “fro”) is a natural hairstyle worn by people with curly hair. Reaching the height of its popularity in the 1970’s, it remains popular today but in a less flambouyant style.

HOW TO GIVE AN AFRO HAIRCUT
The original afro was created by combing the hair back away from the scalp. In doing so, one allowed the hair to extend out from the head in large, round shape. Modern versions of the afro are typically styled with gel to hold the hair in place and mold it into shape.

WHO HAS AN AFRO HAIRCUT?

The afro haircut is popular among celebrities with naturally curly hair like the country singer, Dierks Bentley. Both the oldest and youngest Jonas Brothers, Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas, wear an afro style haircut due to their thick, curly hair.

A version of the afro worn by Jewish men is known as a “Jewfro”. Examples of celebrity men with Jewfros include Seth Rogen, the actor from movies like The Green Hornet, Funny People and Knocked Up and Jonah Hill, the actor from movies like Superbad and Get Him to the Greek.

The Faux Hawk Hairstyle

A faux hawk (or “fake” Mohawk) is meant to look like a mohawk haircut but does so without the wearer having to shave the sides of the head. The mohawk was an important part of the “punk” movement of the 1980s and was worn by punk rockers like Johnny Rotten.

The fauxhawk is typically worn with a spike in the middle, though it is usually shorter than many traditional mohawks.

HOW TO GIVE A FAUX HAWK HAIRCUT
In the faux hawk, the hair is scissor-cut to a short length (as opposed to being shaved completely) and a longer strip of hair down the center of the head is left. Also, where a traditional Mohawk uses sharp lines in the style, the Faux Hawk is textured to blend the distinction between the two lengths of hair.

WHO HAS A FAUX HAWK HAIRCUT?

Early on, the mohawk was mostly seen on punk rockers as well as Mr. T from the A-Team. The fauxhawk, however, has transcended to all hair types and genres. Popular sports figures and celebrities wear fauxhawks in various lengths, textures and colors. They include David Beckham, Jude Law, Blake Lewis, and Ricky Martin. But even though the style has become somewhat mainstream, the faux hawk is still a somewhat rebellious style.

The Businessman Hair Style

A business man’s hair style is a generic term for one of the more conservative and short mens hair styles that is appropriate for an office setting and is a great suit haircut and CEO haircut.

This hair style can be worn by most men, especially if they wish to give a professional appearance, accentuate a square face shape or firm up a softer jaw area.

HOW TO GIVE A BUSINESSMAN HAIRCUT
A business man’s hair style is achieved with a tapered cut on the back and sides, with enough length on the top of the head to be able to part the hair or wear it brushed back from the forehead. The cut can be parted with gel, combed straight back with gel, or parted without gel.

WHO HAS A BUSINESS MAN HAIRCUT?
The business man’s hair style is popular among celebrities such as George Clooney, John Krasinski, Clive Owen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Steve Carrell.  Famous politicians like George Bush, Al Gore, and Mitt Romeny also wear a business man’s hair style.  Athletes like the business man’s hairstyle too–Tom Brady and David Beckham have recently been seen wearing it. TV personalities like Mario Lopez and Brian Williams favor the business man cut for its professional, clean look.

The Bald Head Hair Style

Shaving your head bald is a great way to make yourself look more masculine. Also known as a shaved head haircut or a hairless haircut, the bald haircut suits those who are losing their hair because it cleverly masks the problem.

HOW TO GIVE A BALD HAIRCUT
To achieve this hair style, trim your hair down to stubble with clippers. Then apply a shaving gel and work it into your scalp. Using a sharp razor, start shaving hair that is the thinnest first and then move to areas with more coarse hair such as the back of your head.

The closest results are obtained when you shave against the grain.  This also provides you with less chances of skin irritation. Shave each area of your scalp only one time if possible to prevent irritation and nicks.

WHO HAS A BALD HEAD HAIRCUT?
The bald head hair style is popular among celebrities such as Chris Daughtry, Billy Zane, Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, and Howie Mandel.  The peaceful and spiritual Ghandi also sported a bald head.

The Buzz Hair Style

justin_timberlake_haircutwentworth_miller_haircutdavid_beckham_haircutjason_statham_haircut

A buzz hair style is a very short mens hairstyle.  Also known as a “burr style” or an “induction style”, a buzz cut can make the face look more defined, and it is popular for those who want a short, low-maintenance hair cut. The buzz style is very flattering to a man who has thin hair or is losing hair, as it tends to deflect attention away from his hair (or lack thereof) and towards his face.

HOW TO GIVE A BUZZ HAIRCUT
The cut is usually performed using hair clippers without a comb guard. Cut the sides and then either shape the top or cut the top the same length as the top. The style takes just a few minutes to perform.

WHO HAS A BUZZ HAIRCUT?

The buzz style is popular among celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Wentworth Miller, David Beckham, Jason Statham, and Dwayne Johnson. During a visit with the troops, Stephen Colbert famously got a buzz cut from US General Ray Odierno and aired the cut on his television show, the Colbert Report.

The Flat Top Style

The flat top haircut (also called a high and tight haircut or a crewcut) is a clean, fresh look. Originally popular in the 1950s and 1960s among athletes like Johnny Unitas and members of the US military, the flat top lives on today as a casual yet polished mens short hair style.

HOW TO GIVE A FLAT TOP HAIRCUT
In the flat top, the hair on the sides and back are usually cut in a short taper, and the hair on the top is cut to stand up so that it gives a flat appearance. There are a number of possible length variations with the flat top, though the longer the hair on the top, the more likely you will need some sort of styling product (called butch wax) to get it to stand up straight.

There are also styling variations as to how the sides can be cut to meet the top: the sides can go straight up and give a square appearance to the top of the head (often referred to as a “boxy” flat top), or the sides can be somewhat contoured toward the top, giving a more curved appearance (often referred to as “rounded” or “beveled” flat top).

WHO HAS A FLAT TOP?

The flat top style is popular among male celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Channing Tatum, Chris Evans, Jim Carrey, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Members of the military and policemen also tend to choose this cut because it allows them to maintain a professional, military haircut with a little room for styling. Tom Hanks famously sported a flat top for Forrest Gump’s haircut in the movie, Forrest Gump. Perhaps the most famous flat top today is the worn by Simon Cowell, the infamous music producer and judge from the singing talent show, American Idol.

The Caesar Hair Style

The Caesar haircut is named after Julius Caesar, the emperor of Rome who wore short bangs forward in a similar way. It is also known as a french crop haircut. More recently, George Clooney brought the haircut back to prominence when he wore it while playing Dr. Doug Ross on the television series, ER.

HOW TO GIVE A CAESAR HAIRCUT

In the Caesar hair style, the hair on the top of the head is layered to around a length of 1 to 2 inches, with the front combed forward into short bangs. The back and sides are tapered. The haircut can be slightly gelled, depending on the preference of the wearer.

WHO HAS A CAESAR HAIRCUT?

The Caesar hair style is popular among male celebrities such as Gerard Butler, George Clooney, and Russell Crowe. The rapper Eminem has worn a Caesar style since he burst onto the scene in the late 1990s. Back then, his Caesar cut was bleached blonde. And even though he has now let his natural brown hair color grow out, the Caesar haircut remains. Justin Timberlake has also been known to rock a Caesar haircut.

The Ivy League Hair Style

chris_pine_haircutjesse_mccartney_haircutryan_seacrest_haircutnick_lachey_haircut

This hair style is also known as the “collegiate cut”, the “cambridge cut”, or the “Harvard cut” and gets its name from the college men who favored it because the short sides conformed to dress codes, yet the forward locks showed their personal style. This mens short hair style is suited for men with round faces, as long as the longer hair in the front is styled upwards so as to elongate the face.

HOW TO GIVE AN IVY LEAGUE HAIRCUT

The ivy league is created by cutting the sides and back very short with clippers and then tapering across the crown, with the hair gradually becoming longer and fuller toward the front. In a classic ivy league, the hair is neatly parted and styled, usually with pomade or gel. More contemporary ivy league hair styles comb the hair upward or forward in the front.

WHO HAS AN IVY LEAGUE HAIRCUT?

The ivy league hair style is popular among celebrities such as Chris Pine, Jeremy Renner, Jesse McCartney, Ryan Seacrest, Carson Daly, and Nick Lachey. As the name implies, the ivy league is traditionally sported by young men in their late teens and 20s. However, older men can wear the ivy league just as well as the young guys can. In the Twilight movie saga, Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob, wears an Ivy League Haircut after he has his long hair cut to a shorter style. He wears the Ivy League in all three movies: Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse.

The Pompadour Haircut

The Pompadour Hair Style

elvis_presley_haircutadam_lambert_haircutadam_levine_haircutzachary_quinto_haircut

A pompadour is a generic term for a mens short hair style that involves the hair being brushed up and back from the forehead. Pompadours tend to be very long on the top. Elvis Presley made this style famous when he debuted it in the 1950’s and countless men have followed his example since. A variation on the pompadour is the quiff, a hairstyle that combines the flat top, the pompadour, and sometimes the mohawk.

HOW TO GIVE A POMPADOUR HAIRCUT
Also known as a “rockabilly hair style” or “greaser haircut”, the pompadour is created more by styling and less by cutting. The cut should involve tapering the sides and leaving a good bit of hair on top (at least 3 inches). The styling involves a generous amount of styling gel or pomade. First, apply the gel. Then comb the hair back while also pushing slightly forward near the front to get lift. Finish it off by combing lightly in the back to blend it in and combing back the sides.

WHO HAS A POMPADOUR HAIRCUT?

The pompadour hair style is popular among celebrities such as Adam Lambert, Adam Levine, Zachary Quinto, and Ricky Martin. In the 1950s, James Dean’s golden blonde hair was styled into a pompadour for his movies, among them the popular Rebel Without a Cause. In the 1960s and 1970s, Johnny Cash performed his hit songs like Walk the Line and Ring of Fire while wearing his very own Man in Black version of the pompadour.

The Butch Haircut

The Butch Hair Style

paul_walker_haircuttom_cruise_haircutmatthew_fox_haircut

A butch hair style is one of the shorter mens hair styles so it is easy to maintain. It is clean and stylish and does a good job of disguising thinning hair. Men with round faces should avoid this style, as it tends to accentuate that shape in an unflattering way. For a formal event, a butch haircut can provide just enough hair for a light amount of gel to be applied for polish.

HOW TO GIVE A BUTCH HAIRCUT

The butch hair style is created by taking hair clippers and cutting all the hair to the same length on the top of the head (typically about 1/4 inch or so). It is a somewhat longer hair style than a buzz cut, which is often considered to be 1/8 inch or less. A butch may or may not be tapered around the ears and near the neckline, depending on the preference of the wearer.

WHO HAS A BUTCH HAIRCUT?

The butch hair style is popular among celebrities such as Matthew Fox, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Paul Walker, and Josh Brolin. Women may also choose to get a butch haircut but this fact does not make the hair style ifeminite. On the contrary, calling a women “butch” is slang for suggesting that she acts and looks like a man.
